Contractors and homeowners should be aware of the following new guidelines and information for upgraded hot water heater requirements:
· Next spring, water heaters with a capacity of at least 55 gallons must have an energy factor (EF) of 2.05. Larger electric water heaters will need to be heat-pump water heaters.
· These heat-pump water heaters heat by refrigeration cycle. When required, they also use a resistance element.
· This type of water heater is initially more costly, but also more efficient, which reduces energy costs.
· People in colder climates report “unwelcome cooling.” Unit makers are devising alternative duct options.
· Carefully compensate for the 6-foot unit and its condensation.
· Government incentives exist for those wishing to install.
