After a month of raging through Boulder County, burning over 10,000 acres and forcing thousands from their homes, the CalWood Fire is now fully contained. Dozens of houses were damaged or destroyed, and rebuilding home efforts are desperately needed. Now in the aftermath, we are here for you more than ever.

Surface paving is most commonly accomplished with concrete, asphalt, or some combination of the two. While this is very effective for creating drivable surfaces for our vehicles, it’s not exactly eco-friendly. In fact, the manufacture of cement causes significant carbon emissions in every step of the process. The amount of airborne pollution that is produced by all of this is staggering; it is both expected and necessary for us to create a viable alternative. One up-and-comer in that niche is permeable paving.

In addition to reducing the amount of manufacturing byproducts, permeable grass pavers address another common problem with traditional paving techniques: surface runoff. There is a lot to know about the consequences of surface runoff, but to put it plainly, it occurs when storm water is unable to seep into the ground properly. This causes urban flooding, soil erosion, and the movement of pollutants (such as pesticides and fertilizers) into the public water supply. Permeable pavers prevent all of this by allowing rainfall and snowmelt to pass freely, facilitating proper seepage and stopping the unnatural flow of water across the earth’s surface.

From the standpoint of aesthetics, there are some very obvious advantages to using permeable pavers. They create a fully-functional surface without any of the potential for cracking, rotting, or other maintenance issues. If your property’s gradient causes the buildup of mud and other natural debris in any given area, this is a solution for that, as well. If you are interested in having large trees or a lot of other vegetation on your property, this method will give your root systems room to grow to full size without impediments.

Permeable Pavement Demonstration,
Courtesy of JJ Harrison via Wikipedia Commons

On the other hand, there is also one drawback to consider with permeable paving. Naturally, it cannot withstand the type of traffic volume or weight that its impermeable counterparts can hold. If you tend to have a large number of vehicles moving in and out of your property, grass pavement is probably not the right choice for you. In the absence of this one obstacle, however, permeable grass pavers are an important part of a larger system of eco-friendly solutions. They certainly do not solve every problem that we face as a result of our built environment, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Popular home styles have always served as a sign of the times. Victorian homes, with their elegant and intricate details, are a monument of Queen Victoria’s reign (1840 – 1904). Colonial-style homes are living relics of the colonial period, when various European cultures had colonies scattered throughout the United States. The list goes on, but the idea here is that as cultures change, so do the structures of the time. The world we live in today is no exception. Here are three of the many ways our culture is driving today’s architecture and home design:

The lines between working and living are diminishing.

Our society has always been one that is focused on success and achievement. It’s an inherent feature of capitalism, and in the modern world, that means working at any time and in any place. Technology has given us the gift of telecommuting, and our home design trends are following.

For mobile professionals who wish to take it to the next level, there are a few other choices:

Live-Work Spaces

Studio Shed

Repurposed Shipping Containers (much more modern and innovative than it sounds!)

These home office alternatives are not in the budget for every professional, however. Perhaps the most common manifestation of this is the traditional home office that we’ve all seen once or twice (whether in our own homes or the home of a friend). More and more families are adding an office to their home’s blueprint. Others are ditching their guest rooms or loft spaces and converting them to work spaces. As the workforce continues to evolve, you can expect to see more of the same.

More people are choosing to “age in place”.

American culture is being driven toward an “age in place” philosophy. It is becoming more and more common for families to keep their elders at home for the duration of the aging process, rather than opt for nursing homes or retirement communities. In fact, this has become true for the majority of the Baby Boomer generation. According to a national survey conducted by the AARP, 87% of people who are 65 years of age or older want to age in place. In the 50-64 age range, 71% say they plan to live the rest of their lives at home.

For home design, this means that the meandering labyrinth-style layout is a thing of the past. Families who keep their seniors at home are opting for an open concept (with wider doors and hallways), which is easier for elders to navigate. Safety features, such as wheelchair ramps, built-in shower benches, and grab bars are also becoming more common.

In the kitchen, families are foregoing the beloved island and prep sink in favor of more open space, and it’s not uncommon for these homeowners to request lower-than-average countertops and other wheelchair-accommodating features.

Millennials are a “boomerang” generation.

There are a number of factors at play with millennials and their refusal to enter the housing market. Whatever the cause, they are returning home at astounding rates, causing family homes to become multi-generational residences (sometimes including up to 4 generations at once).

As a result, homes are expanding, mother-in-law suites are making a comeback, and on-site guest houses are becoming more commonplace. This was a very popular concept after World War II, but its prevalence fizzled out after a short time. Today, more than 51 million American families live in this type of arrangement, and that number is growing every day.

As home design trends continue to evolve, we are finding that the majority of these changes are the result of economic and social drivers. If you are interested in updating your home’s features or layout to accommodate your family’s ever-changing lifestyle, contact a member of our team to learn how we can help.

In recent years, the practice of extending a home’s living area by adding an outdoor kitchen has become extremely popular. Outdoor kitchens are a luxurious addition to houses of any size, and they are especially useful if you enjoy entertaining guests in your home. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to planning this outdoor living space; everyone’s needs and personal tastes will vary. However, there are a few must-have elements that you will definitely want to include during the planning process. Here are our top picks for outdoor kitchen must-haves:

Cooking Appliances

This may be the most obvious element in an outdoor kitchen, but trust us when we tell you that not all outdoor cooking appliances are created equal. Gas grills are perhaps the most popular cooking solution, but your options extend far beyond that. Some outdoor kitchens include electric pizza ovens, hibachi grills, warming drawers, and more. Your decision should be made based upon your personal cooking preferences, as well as your budget.

Plumbing

Installing adequate plumbing when you are first planning an outdoor kitchen will make all the difference in the world. Most will, at a minimum, have a small prep sink with a faucet for rinsing food and dishes as necessary. However, if you want to enhance the functionality of your space even more, consider adding a dishwasher that was specifically designed for outdoor use. These do exist, and they will save you a tremendous amount of time and trouble.

Refrigeration

Again, not all outdoor refrigeration solutions are going to offer the same benefits. Some may even seem superfluous, depending on your needs. As you surely know, refrigerators come in various sizes, so choose one that will fit well within the allotted space. Aside from the standard refrigeration, you may also want to consider a beer tap (a very popular choice among craft beer enthusiasts) or outdoor wine fridge.

Seating

Outdoor seating options come in every style, color, finish, and texture that you could ever possibly imagine. The sky is the limit, where this is concerned. While some homeowners prefer for their outdoor kitchen style to mesh well with their interior, others want this space to feel like an escape – something entirely different. Choose something that you will feel comfortable with for years to come.

Safety

Safety should be a top priority for all areas of your home, especially in spaces that are intended for use by your family and guests. Of course, all areas that are designed for cooking should at least have a fire extinguisher nearby. Depending on the location of your kitchen and the cooking appliances you have chosen, a range hood may be necessary to remove smoke and cooking odors. Finally, proper lighting and non-skid flooring are both essential to your personal safety and that of your guests.

You can further customize this area with additional appliances and accessories. Make this space one that you love using; let it be a hub for fun and relaxation in your home. If you’re planning to construct or renovate a home in the near future, treat yourself and your family to an outdoor kitchen. Contact a member of our team for a free consultation today.

A photovoltaic solar system (also known as a PV system and PV power system) is a series of devices designed to capture energy from the sun and convert it into power that you can use. It’s a clean, quiet, and extremely reliable way to power a home or business. In recent years, solar power has become very popular among green living enthusiasts, and experts say that solar is in the perfect position to completely take over the energy industry. In fact, global solar power usage grew by 5,300% from 2005 to 2014. Needless to say, it’s catching on like wildfire.

The sun produces enough energy in one day to power the entire world for one year. Where your home is concerned, a single square meter solar panel can gather enough power to keep a 100W lightbulb lit for the same amount of time. In order to understand how it works, let’s take a look at the larger components of a PV solar system.

Solar Array – This is the term used to refer to the collection of solar cells and panels

Mounting System – This is what holds your system in place. It may be classified as a ground mount, roof mount or pole mount.

Cables – Just like any other power system, solar systems require cables to transmit electric current.

Solar Tracker – This device causes solar panels to tilt toward the sun throughout the day.

Inverter – Inverters convert the DC power that is collected and turns it into an alternating current that can be used to power your home.

Rechargeable Battery – This component is used to store “leftover” power for use during times of little or no sunlight.

Electricity Meter – The meter is what monitors for breakdowns and facilitates optimal performance of the PV solar system.

By looking at the purpose of each of the components, it’s easy to see how this system operates. The solar array, which is mounted on or near the structure to be powered, tilts to follow the sun and capture energy. The power is then inverted and either used immediately or stored as surplus.

Photovoltaic solar systems range from small, roof-top mounted systems that are primarily used in residential projects to large community-wide systems (such as the “Solar Settlement” housing community in Freiburg, Germany). They were once a niche application, but those days are long gone. Solar power is now a mature and reliable technology. It has earned its place among the top sustainable building techniques, and it is surely here to stay. Contact us if you’d like to learn more about making solar power part of your green home renovation.
