The 1970’s energy crisis in the United States inspired the green building movement. Some builders began to propose that people should live, breathe, and bathe in their homes and communities, secure that the building materials surrounding them are not toxic. In the coming years, green builders hope to see policy makers in the Philippines reach the same conclusions, considering the fact that studies show a large portion of the population would face energy poverty in case of crisis and climate change would heavily impact Philippine coastline and agricultural dependence. A unified approach to establishing guidelines, adhering to internationally accepted standards, and amending current codes will be key to successful sustainability.
