Home-building Trends Include Big Garages, Tray Ceilings

Philadelphia architect Jim Wentling notes developing homebuilding trends, an encouraging sign that, despite the current economy, Americans are optimistically looking to the future. On the first floor, builders are seeing a shift in priorities. More garage and great room space, a dedicated office rather than a living room, and a formal dining room are important to buyers. The second floor laundry room and bedrooms are also candidates for more square footage. As far as amenities are concerned, master suites aren’t complete without a tray ceiling and roomy shower. Family must-haves include an entry area “drop zone”, or mudroom, and convenient family “command center” near the kitchen.
