Construction Sector Job Openings Reach Five-Year High

According to the October BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), 124,00 construction jobs remained unfilled. While openings were on pace with growth in the home building areas, hiring was not. Employment was modest, the hiring rate actually remained unchanged at 5.2% moving into the fall of 2013. It has become a home building industry priority to effectively fill job openings with qualified employees in 2013. Due to layoff decreases, increased open positions since 2012 point to modest gains in construction hiring soon, if firms can find appropriately skilled workers. Still, a recent decline in overall construction activity may impact hiring; data for November will reveal the impact to construction job openings.
