Designing Great Houses by the Water

Dan Gregory, editor of houseplans.com and blogger of Eye on Design, shares his thoughts on several distinctive waterside home designs. He reflects on how each home must respond to its natural setting, as must all homes. He states that builders and designers should “Nurture what nature gives you and make it your own.” He includes commentary on the Clara Fargo Thomas house of 1937 on Mt. Desert Island in Maine, a California home built in the 1960’s near Big Sur by architectural photographer Morley Baer, and some of New York’s rustic designs built for wealthy families in the late 1800’s around the Adirondack region.
