Undoing the Dings of Life

Mike Litchfield shares a personal anecdote and home renovation tip he learned from a contractor friend who was showing a newly renovated master bedroom to some clients. As the clients marveled at the cherry renovation, one of the crew came in carrying a long metal tool and accidentally dented the brand new $300 door with a 1/4 inch gash. As the smiles died off of the clients’ faces, contractor Dean Rutherford gathered a damp cloth and a standard iron and showed how ironing the dent over the wet cloth heated and expanded the wood until it filled itself in. From there, the expanded wood was sanded back down to level and then refinished.
