Year-Long Study of Net-Zero Energy Home Completed Successfully

It’s a success! The Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility (NZERTF) in Washington DC completed its year-long study with positive outcome. Scientists spent the year investigating the energy harvesting capabilities of a house built at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Using computers, the team simulated the energy use of a family of four. This included bathing, gadget use, television watching, and more. The results showed that the home generated about 491 kWh more energy than was needed, mainly due to the home’s ultra efficient thermal envelope. The key now is to make this type of efficiency affordable. The current price tag to outfit a home is $162,700!
