When heavy products are unloaded from ships at the Port of Portland, OR, the rough wood 4x4s used in packing the goods are discarded in a landfill. Joe Michoff and Pierce Henley saw opportunity in the waste and their company, Viridian Wood Products, now reclaims and markets the wood to build beautiful decks, flooring, and countertops. The tropical woods are heat-treated to kill any insect hitchhikers, and milled to standard sizes. In addition to saving tropical hardwoods, Viridian has repurposed Douglas fir from high school bleachers, oak from truck decks, and wine casks made from old-growth redwood. Prices, while somewhat higher, are offset by the hardiness of the woods and the satisfaction of reducing waste.
