Landscape architect Anna Peltier brings her passion for living sustainably into her own yard by creating an edible oasis. Fruit trees bloom in the backyard. Grape vines provide fruit, and provide shade for an outdoor dining area. Peltier celebrates the local plants that have nourished humans for centuries. Native edibles from the surrounding desert include honey mesquite, Indian fig prickly pear, ocotillo, Indian rice grass, Mormon tea, banana yucca, and barrel cactus. She makes the most of moisture with a roof designed to channel rainwater into cisterns, and a series of basins to store water for later use. The result is a beautiful and sustainable landscape that also contributes to the dinner table.
