Grow Your Own Green… Insulation, That Is

The greenest insulation yet may be on the horizon. It’s natural, involves no hydrocarbons, yields almost no toxic waste, and takes very little energy to create. Not only that, it will improve the quality of indoor air and can be grown. This new insulation is mushroom insulation. It is being pioneered by Eben Bayer and Gavin McIntyre, who came up with the idea of using mycelium to replace plastics. They worked on the idea during their senior year at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute and then formed a business after graduation with grants and prize money from competitions such as the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge.
