Do Your Homework When Selecting a Contractor

Avoid becoming the unfortunate victim of an inept, or unscrupulous, contractor during your next home remodel. Protect yourself with the following helpful advice:

  • After choosing a contractor, confirm licensing, bonding and reputation. View the contract type, and carefully review the contractor’s description of the agreement. Obtain a copy of the contract before starting work.

  • Any changes to the project must be in writing.

  • If problems arise, mitigate the possibility of having to file a court claim by consulting an attorney first.

  • If a complaint remains unresolved, investigate your eligibility to file a Guaranty Fund claim for amounts under $20,000.

  • Most of all, do the best research possible to protect your home and investment.
