Solar Power for Home Use: The Grid Connection

Has your town or city encouraged you to install a rooftop photovoltaic system? The push to “solarize” has many homeowners wondering how their PV system relates to the local power grid.  Solar power is a practical, viable option because of grid connections.  Increasing ability to tie your home solar system to the grid is financially advantageous, given recent net-metering arrangements. On the other hand, utility companies are concerned that net-metering forces non-solar customers to pay larger share grid maintenance costs, and have employed various fee systems and tariffs. Incongruent solar rates make solar power difficult for homeowners to adopt.
