Affordable Housing Program Goes from ‘Project to Product’

Imagine a complete home built for just $20,000. The Rural Studio at Auburn University’s school of architecture, established in 1993, has spent the last 20 years accomplishing that goal. The homes have been an exercise for undergraduates to obtain hands-on design and construction experience. The projects also serve the people of west Alabama. The homes have become known as the 20K houses, since students strive to spend just 12,000 on materials and 8,000 on labor. The homes are a viable and preferable alternative to a trailer, and an attractive, appreciating option for those who don’t qualify for credit. The projects are also a help to the community, providing additional jobs and economic growth.
