Over the course of the last three years, three well-respected building science researchers, Bruce Wilcox, John Proctor, and Rick Chitwood, shared their findings regarding opportunities for improving energy efficiency in existing homes. According to the data collected during the Stockton project, shared at the Forum on Dry Climate Home Performance, the amount of energy waste can be curbed in several key ways. Using homes built in 2005, 1996, 1953, and 1948, the researchers determined that key improvements to the HVAC systems, windows, insulation, and ductwork vastly improved efficiency. Work to the 2005 house was predictably less involved, and focused primarily on the HVAC system, while work to the other three homes yielded the most savings.
