The day is fast approaching when off-grid, solar-plus-battery systems will easily compete with the traditional grid of electric service. Chances are, this will happen within just 10 years for commercial entities, and 20 years for the rest of the population. What does this mean for consumers and providers? Maybe nothing: Consumers may prefer the convenience and comfort of the status quo. Maybe everything: We could see innovation and revolutionary changes in appliance and energy usage technology that catches on in homes, inspiring shifts comparable to historical shifts from bulky, expensive computers to super-fast personal computing devices. Are consumers ready to transition from centralized, outsourced energy services to self-sustained appliance-based power? We’ll see.
