If the air in your house is uncomfortably dry and you are contemplating a humidifier purchase, look into these dry air culprits first: 1) Does your air have an atmospheric combustion furnace in unconditioned space? It may be bringing cold, dry air in from outside. 2) Does your house leak? Reduce air infiltration to improve house moisture levels. 3) Do you over ventilate? You may be getting too much of a good thing, regulate heating and humidifying. 4) Do your ducts leak? Be sure to stop air infiltration through ductwork with secure seals.
