The NAHB conducted its 2013 construction cost survey via email, seeking information from 3,019 homebuilders. Thirty-nine respondents reported usable information about the average home built during 2013. The survey provides a general outline of construction costs for an average home, but is not large enough to present a breakdown by region. The average size of a home in the 2013 construction cost survey was 2,607 square feet with a lot size averaging a third of an acre. Interior finishes, framing, exterior finishes, system rough-ins, foundations, site work, final steps, and miscellaneous expenses account for construction costs. The average construction cost of a single-family home in the 2013 survey was $246,453, the highest since 1998.
