New Rule for Replacing Plumbing Fixtures in 2014

California must conserve water. To accomplish that goal, a 2009 building permit law will be enforced heading into the New Year. The state law requires the installation of water-saving toilets, showerheads, and faucets in projects for homes over 20 years old. Since remodelers, builders, and officials are unfamiliar with the law, the potential for a variety of interpretations and subsequent, widespread misunderstanding is likely. People will probably attempt to quickly obtain permits before year’s end. Though the need for cost saving measures is understood, contractors and inspectors predict community backlash and a hit to the construction and housing markets as citizens come to recognize the significant monetary increases that must be included in their budgets.
