For many baby boomers, the goal after retirement is to live at home as long as possible, also known as “aging in place”. To accomplish this, many contractors and designers have become adept at creating functional yet fashionable spaces. Costs to incorporate new, universal design elements vary as remodels include anything from installing paddle switches to widening hallways to mounting a curb-less shower. Boomers appreciate design focused on maintaining their autonomy and privacy. Aesthetics are important, as are assistive adaptations in the kitchen and baths. Sunrooms are also popular. Younger people also are keeping the future in mind, opting to include universal options now rather than retro fit later.
