Spray foam is perfectly viable option, if you do the job well. Whether insulating an existing home or a new green home, there are common installation pitfalls you’ll want to avoid. First make sure the foam is thick enough, checking to be sure you’re not shorted, especially where you are using closed cell foam. Then, preserve the foam’s air-sealing ability, being sure to spray so that you don’t miss air leakage sites. Next, ensure that every part of the building enclosure is insulated with clear knowledge of the boundary between conditioned and unconditioned space. Finally, preserve your energy savings by making sure insulation is not pulling away from the wall and ceiling framing.
