The twenty-first century has been an era of phenomenal growth for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. The US Green Building Council reports that LEED certainly made its presence known with just over 59,000 buildings participating. According to LEED, credit for such a rapid rise is given to governmental commitment to green building. The government’s early participation and implementation in a multitude of building projects allowed LEED the exposure and influence necessary to become the standard. Now LEED is know as the source for ways and means regarding energy and resource savings, though the US General Services Administration also supports Green Building Initiative’s Green Globes program as another viable third-party certification provider.
