Travis Larson has a house with a lot of iron in the well water. This well requires a water softener to make the water palatable and prevent rust stains under the house’s faucets. Over the course of twenty-five years, a house like this has required two water softener replacements, but it is possible to get more life out of a water softener even when using it on heavily iron-laden water. To begin with, it makes a big difference if you use high quality, iron-removing salt pellets in the water softener rather than the normal rock salt you might use for water less heavy. It’s also important to clean the resin bed regularly.
