Dave Gauthier, president of Vantem Panels, a structural insulated panels (SIPs) manufacturing company in Brattleboro, Vermont, has created a product called “SmartHomze,” which are kits for high performance house shells that can be assembled for about $150 per square foot, as compared to the $200-250 average for other high-performance housing. SmarHomze kits have five sizes which range between 560 square feet to 1700 square feet, the largest of which features three bedrooms and 2-1/2 bathrooms. The idea came from Gauthier’s experience in working with many high-end houses and his desire to make net-zero energy homes available to a broader range of customers.
