According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 235,000 people over the age of fifteen go to the emergency room each year with injuries that took place in the bathroom. About 33,000 of them are hospitalized from the injuries. For all ages, most accidents involved bathing, showering, and getting out of either the bath or shower. The number of injuries increase with the age of the people involved, and falls in the bathroom are more likely to be fatal for seniors. Universal design concepts in the bathroom are focused on mitigating the risks of the bathroom to make it safer for all ages, without giving up aesthetics.
