In a 1972 edition of the magazine Pool News, industry professionals attempted to predict what the future of residential swimming pools would look like. Many thought that there would be a move towards automation, virtually eliminating the need for constant maintenance. Others speculated that there would be vast improvements in heating systems and chlorination techniques, allowing pools to look and feel more natural. Some believed that the types of materials used to build pools were going to change as well. While some of these predictions did come to pass, others were less accurate about the way things would look in the future.
